Welcome to Shout Your Head Off. I’m Anil, and this is my corner of the internet — a place where I write honestly about life, health, loss, and the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other.
I came to the UK from India in 1972 with nothing but the clothes on my back. I worked for 35 years, raised a family, and spent years as a full-time carer to my wife, who passed away in 2019 after a long illness. In January 2021, I spent 10 days in hospital with Covid-19, not knowing if I would come home. When I did, I made a decision: I was going to get my life back.
This blog is the story of that journey — the walks, the setbacks, the grief, the small victories, and the things I’ve learned about keeping going when everything feels impossibly hard.
The best place to start
If you’re new here, these are the posts that best capture what this blog is about:
→ Walking Back to Fitness — How I went from struggling to climb the stairs after Covid to completing a million-step challenge
→ A Memorable Experience — The night my wife collapsed on a flight from Mumbai, and why some stories demand to be told
→ New Beginnings — Week 1 — The day I decided to reverse my diabetes and lose weight, diary style
→ My Emotional State, Revisited — The hardest thing I’ve ever written, and the most important
→ Cancer Changed My Life — Part 1 — The moment everything shifted
What you’ll find here
Walking & Adventures — I walk with the Windsor and District Ramblers across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and beyond. Every walk is a story.
Health & Diabetes — I’ve been a diabetic since 1992. I write honestly about managing it, the struggles, and the wins.
Life & Emotions — Grief, loss, resilience, and the quiet work of healing. Written from the heart, always.
Stories — Longer pieces from a life fully lived. Some funny, some painful, all true.
Thank you for being here. Pull up a chair, make a cup of tea, and stay a while.
